      Science Experiment: Egg in Vinegar

We have conducted our first science experiment in class!  This is an experiment that Rio did at home and we decided to duplicate the experiment at school!

      Question:
      • What happens if an egg is put into vinegar for more than 24 hours?
      Prediction:
(Students made their own predictions.  See the below examples.)

      • The egg will break.
      • The egg will get larger.
      • The egg will not change.
      • The egg will explode.

      Materials
      • Eggs
      • vinegar
      • jar with lid

      Procedure
This is the egg at the start of the experiment.
      1. Put the egg in the jar.
      2. Cover the egg with vinegar.
      3. Put the lid on the jar.
      4. Wait 24 hours or more.

      Conclusion

The egg was in vinegar about 36 hours.  We noticed that the egg has more bubbles than before. The egg also became larger!
This is the egg after 36 hours.
Taking the egg out we touched it to discover that it feels like jelly or rubber.

After waiting four days we discovered that the egg is bouncy!

How can we change the experiment to learn something new?
      • What will happen after 2 weeks?
      • How will it feel after 3 weeks?
      • What will happen if we break it?
      • How high can I drop it until it breaks? (use a ruler!)
      • Can this egg be cooked like a normal egg?
      • What will come out of the middle?
      • What would happen if this egg is put in the sun?
      • What would happen if a needle is put into this egg?
      • What would happen if this egg is put in the refrigerator?
